Driving

So today my baby girl got her learner's permit. After she got home from school, she wanted to go driving. We needed to go to WalMart, so hubs and I decided to let this be her first driving lesson. It was very scary! She hasn't had the behind-the-wheel training part of her driving school yet. My car is a mini van with power steering and power brakes and automatic transmission. VERY easy to steer, turn, etc. Well, darling daughter of mine decides that she needs to use both feet on the gas pedal and the brake pedal. Hubs is in the front seat with her. He keeps telling her to use only one foot. He tells her to go. ZOOM! She hits the gas and away we go down our residential street at about 35 miles per hour, heading straight for the curb! Hubs and I both yell "STOP!" She hits the brake and we stop just before we hit the curb! Me: "Okay, this isn't your Barbie car that you used to deliberately drive into the bushes when you were four. This is a real car and you need to try to keep it going straight!" Hubs calmly says, "That's okay, hon, you're doing good. Just try not to give it too much gas all at once." As the color returns to his face, he says, okay, try it again. After she drove around the block a couple of times, she was "ready" (and I use that term VERY lightly) to go out into traffic. She was nervous and the traffic was pretty heavy for the time of day it was, but we made the four mile trip to WalMart without crashing into anything. And, considering it was her first time behind the wheel, and the traffic level that was out there, she actually did very well, and I'm proud of her. It was just very hard not to yell from the back seat. When we got to WalMart, hubby said "I think I should drive home, because by the time we finish our shopping, the traffic will be even worse and you don't have enough experience yet to drive in heavy traffic." I breath a huge sigh of relief!
Now she's wanting to get a note of permission to drive to school next week by herself. We keep telling her that with only a permit, she is not allowed to drive alone. She must have a licensed driver with her at all times. She can't get that concept. Keeps saying, "There's five exceptions. I read it in the driver's manual." We told her, "there may be five exceptions, but you don't meet the requirements of those exceptions and you will not drive alone until you have a license!" What can I say, she's 16. How many of us believed everything our parents told us at that age?
Well, tomorrow's another day, and I'm sure, another driving opportunity. What, my hair isn't gray enough? Sigh!

You sure are much braver than I was. We lived in a very small town when our 2 kids learned to drive. I didn't do the coaching, hubby did, maybe why son takes more risks. Daughter is a pretty good driver. Kudos to you "mom."

I had my daughter practice in an empty parking lot.... I doubled up on the deoderant and had huge bowls of ice cream afterwards to relieve the stress lol!

my parents wouldn't let me drive until we had driven in driver's ed.

well, everyone else had driven before so the teacher assumed I had too. He let me in traffic on my first ever behind the wheel experience. it was scary for all present. even though it will drive (no pun there) you crazy let her practice a lot.
